    "Get away from me!"

The school system has its flaws. While it for the most part is a much more controlled environment than what it used to be, it's only "for the most part".

Matt Hastings was on the losing end of the system. Never the most confident of individuals and always the target of jocks and other fools who like nothing more than to step upon the vulnerable students, Hastings didn't enjoy attending school, to say the least.

"How was your day, Matt?" was not a question he liked hearing. His parents knew of what was going on and the school system had been told, but hadn't done much. Matt had actually noticed a pattern in their disciplinary tactics, most bullies would be punished with something light like detention or suspension, as an expulsion hearing requires police intervention, but it seemed that the school completely turned a blind eye towards one particularly brutal student, who wasn't punished at all.

This ignorance meant that Matt would have to use his own devices.

***

Winter break had just ended, and everyone was headed back to their daily routine of forming blockades in the hallway so they could chat with their friend about stupid shit such as American politics. Matt had had a decent break, nothing special but nothing bad, somewhat sur-

"Hey, I missed ya, Matt!" Aaaand so much for that. The main harasser, a senior that Matt usually just called "the senior", had spotted him already, as he was walking into the school. Matt sighed and turned towards the harasser, giving him an unimpressed stare for a few seconds before turning back around and walking into the school. He wasn't having it today. "Where you going, bud? Come on..."

"Jeez, can you guys stop being friggin’ bystanders and help me out here?", Matt thought to himself. He thought maybe mob mentality would convince the school, but no one seemed to want to assist. Frustrated, Matt clomped to his first class and sat down at his desk, only to gasp in horror as the senior entered his classroom, having seemingly followed Matt in. Matt hoped the senior had another reason for entering the classroom. To his relief, this was the case.

"Teach, I left a book here. You gots it?" Matt hid under the desk, thinking the senior was going to do a sweep of the classroom.

    "No, I don’t-"

"I left a fuckin’ book here and you're gonna find it for me!" As the teacher tried to calm the senior down, another student hiding under the desk noticed Matt and grabbed his attention.

"Matthew. You hide from the senior too?" Matt nodded at his fellow sophomore. "Yeah, he's pretty scary. He's been after me since freshman year." The senior was tall, buff, and intimidating, with a psychotic smile and a terrifying scowl.

"So why do the teachers just stand and take it? I mean of course a teacher can't really fight back, but-"

"His parents have money and they give the school some of that money. Simple as that, y'know?  Not quite sure if they even give him a detention when stood up to. I guess the only way to get him to back down is by beating the hell out of him, but I don't see that happening." Matt sighed, knowing this probably was his only option, to hope he, or someone else, could take down the senior.

"Look at me, though. I'm not the most tough. I'd need like a super pill if I wanted to get stronger before the school year ends, and I don't think those exist.", Matt snarkily said, glancing over his shoulder as if to soliloquy an invisible audience.

"...Well, there is a rumor..." Matt's eyes lit up. "Just a rumor, but they say that a couple months ago a kid about our age went to some sort of weird gym that immediately closed after he left, but before they did they gave him a pill that turned him into some sort of extremely buff girl from a show. No idea if it's true but that's what they're saying. It's pretty incredible." Matt scratched his head, trying not to giggle at the story's ridiculousness, though secretly he was a bit interested in learning about this all.

"...I guess I should look into that. Thanks...wait, you said he, right?" Matt had never heard of anyone turning into a girl as quickly and efficiently as that before. That was silly...

"Yep. He into she. Again it's just a rumor I heard, and it's pretty dumb, I'm gonna have to say. But yeah, that's what I heard." As he said this, the senior left the classroom without his book, and everyone popped above their desks again. The teacher shook her head, gathered her material, and sat down for a breather before she started with the day's lesson.

Lunch. At long last, a break.

Matt sat down and began to eat his sandwich. He had a few friends who usually sat with him, but most of them were out that day, either sick, just getting back from vacation, or just too lazy. One of his harassers came by and began doing what he normally did, annoy the everloving shit out of Matt with petty insults, but Matt stayed silent and eventually his harasser got bored.

"Hey faggot! Give me that shit!" The whole cafeteria turned to see what was going on, and everyone was mortified to see the senior going for a piece of pie that one of the freshmen had brought. Matt shook his head and went back to his sandwich.

"Yo smartass." The same student who'd been teasing him earlier in the lunch period called to him. Matt rolled his eyes and kept eating. "Wanna say the senior ain't with me. Actually he probably got as few friends as you do." His harasser turned straight ahead, watching the struggle for the slice of pie continue, shaking his head.

"So...you guys actually fear him?", Matt asked, genuinely surprised, "I thought he was kinda your leader." Matt's harasser shook his head.

After the day ended, Matt's first priority was to run home and look up who this person was that his classmate was talking about. He hadn't been given a name nor location, so it would be an endurance running any terms he could think of through the search engines. Of course, there was no proof of it, but he did find one or two people on message boards and the sort talking about it. On one of his last searches before giving up, Matt finally managed to find a small newspaper referring to it. It seemed to be one of those small town newspapers just barely staying afloat, allowing Matt to put two and two together as to why he believed there was no uprising: everyone who didn't directly investigate may have just seen this as a sensational article done by a dying newspaper...which was half right.

A local teen has claimed that his life has been forever changed by a bizarre incident at a gym. The teen, identified as Reese Cartier, was reportedly given a supplement of an unknown composition at a newly-opened gym in town. During his walk home, Reese insists that he unknowingly underwent a bizarre body shift into a replica of a fictional female character by the name of Yang Xiao Long from the web series RWBY.

"I didn't feel a thing...", said Reese, whose body indeed seemed to have become that of an authentic female, "When I got home, I was so tired from the workout the gym gave me that I didn't notice what had happened until I hopped in the shower. I was so scared when I saw what had occurred, I didn't know what to do...so I just screamed and screamed. My parents thought someone'd broken in and I had to convince them otherwise..."

"My first thought when I realized that I was talking to my kid was "What happened? How could this happen to my kid?" It was like something you'd read in a science fiction novel. I still don't know what to think...", said Reese's father, who asked that his name not be given, "Reese is content though, and he seems okay with this all. I don't know how he's able to handle this, but he is...and I applaud him for that, but..."

Police are currently trying to find the owner or owners of the gym, who apparently fled shortly after Reese was given the supplement.

Police have not released how many employees they believe there were, nor any details about the owner or owners, though they did state that there were at the very least two employees.

"I can't say anything in reference to the investigation beyond that the gym owner or owners appear to have fled in a hurry.", said Police Chief Louis Carde, "I've honestly never seen anything like this, never heard of anything like this, can't find reference to anything like this, it's all so...amazing and unprecedented."

Police have said that they will release certain details about the suspects when the details become known to them.

"It's been a farce convincing friends," said Reese, "I also have to get all sorts of new papers and new documents...it's pretty messy to be honest, but I hope I can use this as a new beginning."

***

"...Well then. That's pretty incredible..." Matt froze. He'd clicked an attached image of Reese in his new body and was stunned at how flawless a resemblance Reese had to Yang. "Holy shit, they weren't kidding around...how the hell did this even happen, anyway? That's absolutely insane." Matt had read the article, but he still didn't get it. "I doubt it, but...are there any books on this in the library? I mean I guess it's worth a look..." Matt wasn't looking to transform himself, he just wanted to find out more about the phenomenon, if there was even more to know.

"It's like Mai Natsume..." Matt was an occasional BlazBlue player, and usually chose Mai when he did, mostly because he played well as her. He wasn't huge with the game, he just was making a note.

The next day, Matt's free time was dedicated to looking around the school library. It was a longshot, and of course there wasn't anything there, but in Matt's mind it had been worth a go. But now he'd changed his mind. At this point, Matt was ready to just write it off as what it seemed to be: a silly story run by a dying paper. In fact, he was almost kicking himself for not seeing it that way from the get-go.

"Move the hell on, Matt. C’mon, let's get back to class, lunch is probably almost over." Matt was just leaving the library and was about to proceed to his next class when he spotted a familiar face. It was the senior, brutally harassing an underclassman and calling him words too raunchy and insensitive to repeat. Matt shook his head and continued past. He was getting tired of watching the senior harass everyone, including himself. He was tired of the school's ignorance. He felt he needed to drill into their heads what was going on, because this was turning into pure anarchy.

***

"So what can I help you with, Mr. Hastings?" The principal was a busy man who very rarely spoke directly to anyone, students included. Matt decided he'd use this rare instance to his advantage and explained everything he knew about the senior, plus everything he'd witnessed. When he was done, the principal nodded, told him that he’d look into it, and sent Matt on his way. Matt was fully expecting to never receive an update beyond that, but was surprised when he was called down to the office the next day. Matt was hoping it was to report that the senior had finally been punished, but of course it wasn’t. In fact, it was much worse.

"Detention? You're joking with me, right?"

"No. We can't find any evidence of your statements. Simple, straightforward." Matt was furious. The principal was clearly punishing him for trying to stand up to a donor. That was it. The second Matt went home, he was getting the police involved. This was corruption at its finest. "Your detention will be today."

Matt was by this point beyond livid. He wasn't thinking straight, otherwise he'd get someone actually trustworthy involved. This wasn't how things were supposed to work. He should have been sitting at home, relieved at having solved an issue, and instead he was sitting in a classroom for an hour and a half. It was absolutely ridiculous.

"...So what is there to do here..." Matt needed a way to kill time. He'd only been sitting there for about ten minutes, and already it had felt like forever. Matt got up and began looking through the books on the classroom's shelf. It was full of the standard reference books and other crap, all uninteresting, nothing he liked. Desperate to find something he could read, Matt got on his hands and knees and started searching under the shelf, which was raised a few inches off the ground. Matt searched around with his shoulder against the shelf for a bit before his hand came in contact with a hardcover book.

"Hmm? What's this?" The book was a bit dusty, but didn't seem to be very old, and was in very good condition. It had a plain black cover, and was simply adorned with a title written in yellow, though Matt wasn't even able to decipher it as it was in another language. "This thing’s...really weird..." Matt opened up the book and began to flip through the pages. At first it looked to be in old English, odd considering how new the book itself appeared to be. But pretty soon it became apparent that this wasn't in old English, it was in some sort of creole instead. It was very difficult to understand much, but it wasn't impossible, and Matt was able to piece together a few sentences, just enough to figure out what the book was.

"Looks to be a records book, keeping track of people. But what's it doing here, and where the heck is it referring to? That's...really strange." This book referred to places and people he wasn't even aware of, and generally was all very confusing.

"Well, guess that's all I can get out of this thing. Still really weird, we should remember where it is for another day-"

"YOU LITTLE SHIT!" Matt spun around in horror, recognizing the voice. It was the senior. He'd picked the classroom's lock and gotten inside. "You trying to get me fucked over? I'm gonna tear you apart!" Matt stood there in stunned silence as the senior approached him, clearly ready for a brawl. How did he even know who'd told the principal?

"Uhm...what? I, uh, didn't do anything to you! Wha-why-what are you even talking about?" The senior didn't say anything. He was looking through the teacher's desk for something to fight with. It didn't have anything noteworthy in it, however, so it was time for some standard fisticuffs. "Back up! I, uh, have a book!" Matt knew this sounded really dumb, but it was all he had to defend himself with. The senior began backing him into a corner without a word and without much emotion. Matt knew he had to escape, so he did the only attack he knew: the nut shot. It didn't appear to hurt the senior any, but it did stun him for a second, giving Matt enough time to squeeze by. He darted to the door, which had been unlocked by his pursuer, and dashed out. The school secretaries were probably still at their desks and would spot him if he tried to bail out the building, so he fled to the only other place he knew to be safe: the restroom.

***

"*wheeze* *wheeze* All right...I should be safe here..." Matt had found a grate above one of the stalls which reached into a ventilation shaft which barely fit him. He'd crawled down the shaft, somehow turned around at a T-junction, and was peering through the grate, waiting for the senior, who he assumed was looking for him. "What to do now..." Matt checked his phone to see if it still had some battery, which it of course did not. He wasn't about to risk hopping back down when he didn't know if the coast was clear, and if he went crawling deeper into the ventilation shaft, he could either get stuck and possibly suffocate or drop down into a staff meeting.

"...Why not read the book, I guess." Matt still had it in his hand, so why not pass the time? He flipped through to the table of contents to see if there was anything besides the census records which referred to unknown locations and unknown people and was somewhat surprised to find a quote below the table of contents, with a rather unnerving warning.

"Warning: If one with knowledge of the below-mentioned curse is to read the passage at the page's bottom, they will be subject to a life-changing curse once delivered upon a curious boy by the powerful Azure. All right...what does that mean?" The more Matt read this, the less he understood. "Is this to deter people from reading the book? Is it to catch dumb people off guard? Well..." Matt glanced down at the passage and, for the hell of it, he read it to himself. "I hereby give control of my body to the Azure. May its radiance shine upon me." Matt paused a few seconds, shrugged, and decided to keep reading through the census records. What he didn't know is that he had indeed triggered a curse. The book had been released by a brutal government who believed their citizens to be idiots. They were forced by a treaty to release census records to the public, so, as to deter people from reading them, they included a curse implanted within the words of the book. After testing, the government realized that, for whatever reason, it only worked on people who knew of a case in which a boy by the name of Mai Hazuki turned into a girl named Mai Natsume, and made the info about Mai public. A bit later, they published the book with the curse - a sex-changing curse to be precise (no one's quite sure why) - imprinted into the passage on the table of contents. When people began suffering the same fate, word of mouth made people stop reading the book. A copy of the book eventually went missing and somehow found its way underneath a bookshelf in Matt's school, where it was just waiting for someone with knowledge of Mai Natsume and what had happened to her to read it.

***

As Matt read through the passages, his body began to alter and shift considerably. His body rather slowly shrunk a few inches to about five-foot-four, a maneuver made a little tricky by his horizontal position, though whatever was causing this change would not be stopped. Matt's body hair retracted into his body, a sort of needle-like sensation that he picked up on, and his skin began to smoothen over.

"Hm?" Matt closed the book out of confusion. He wasn't able to look at his legs due to his position in the ventilation duct, but he could sure feel it. Matt's feet slimmed slightly inside his shoes, though interestingly they remained a little bulky. The fat and excess muscle on his lower and upper legs both began to recede, crushing back into his body and ceasing to exist. It felt very bizarre down there, almost like a little kid was hugging his leg, but of course, things were about to get more bizarre.

"What the hell's going on here? I just wish...I could look and see..." Matt's stomach then started to feel very...strange. It didn't really feel bad, per se, just very weird. It was a warm bubbling feeling, as if he'd drank a warm drink and then taken an Alka-Seltzer.

This feeling didn't last too long, as it was quickly followed up with a sudden rush of ecstacy that made Matt yelp. He used the limited room he had in the ventilation shaft to flip, almost with a sideways jump, onto his back, a strengthening downwards pulling motion persisting the whole way through. Matt stared in disbelief as the forward arch at the front of his shorts began to lower into his body, with one last massive rush of pure yes, so huge that Matt shook quite violently inside the ventilation shaft, serving as a farewell cry from his genitals. Everything began to settle down for a second or three, only for the silence to be broken by a sharp ripping pain on his rear. The formation of the vagina was so abrupt that it literally made Matt jump despite being on his back, sending him into the inside top of the ventilation shaft and back down.

"Oh...goddamn...oh fuck, what's going..." Dazed and confused, Matt turned onto his stomach with the intention of crawling out the vent. The changes weren't waiting for that, though. Matt's rear smoothened over, almost as if an industrial cleaner had been applied to it. After that, it became a full on musical. Matt's confusion was quickly supplemented by a melody of cracking sounds as his bones began to shift. Matt's hips locked back to allow for a rather enviable rear end, but his shoulders actually snapped forward. By this point, Matt was extremely uncomfortable, and it had become clear that his body didn't want to move, so he flipped onto his back to rest for a few seconds. His brain was scrambling to find the cause of this, after all. The still-persistent bubbling had stayed in his stomach, but the warmth had begun to slowly travel up the body, crushing in the waist as it went and creating a very slight hourglass. The warmth stopped at the upper chest, and after a moment, it began literally slamming into the upper chest wall like a quarterback. With each impact, a pair of extremely enviable breasts began to form, a change Matt had watched with a blank stare. It was a bizarre contrast, as Matt's feet were still rather thick, his new hourglass was unimpressive, and there was still a bit of fat left over at the upper leg, but it was one that would get a few looks for sure.

"No, I'm getting out of this vent and...and..." Matt began to stutter, having noticed ‘his’ voice wasn't immune to the fun. Matt's Adam's Apple had crushed in considerably and ‘his’ voice had lightened, having now become bizarrely familiar. Matt's face viciously yet painlessly crushed towards ‘his’ nose, shrinking it and guillotining any leftover facial hair. ‘His’ eyes flickered like a broken traffic light and rounded out slightly, finally settling on a magentaish red when they were done changing shape.

The changes stopped briefly, just long enough for Matt to assume that it was over. ‘He’ grabbed the book and swiftly crawled back to the corner further down the ventilation where ‘he’ could turn back around. In the meantime, Matt's hair had started changing, with a vibrant purple wave permeating from Matt's pores and traveling up the hair, changing the hair’s color and thinning it into a very silky composition as it went. As Matt finally turned around, the wave had reached the end of the pre-existent hair, but instead of stopping, it just kept going, creating new hair that flowed behind Matt's head. Matt was unaware of this, being as ‘he’ was literally crawling backwards through the ventilation. Eventually, Matt reached the end of the ventilation and dropped down onto one of the toilets with surprising stability. ‘He’ opened the stall door, turned towards the mirrors and just stared.

"Wha...what the..." There was still one more thing that had to transform, however, that being the clothes. As Matt stood, they used the opportunity to alter. Matt’s shoes split wide open, their collars extending outwards and upwards by a pretty wide margin, and they changed color in a fashion similar to a painter painting a new color onto them, though of course there was no painter this time. These new shoes, colored white with yellow collar, were almost like boots, though not quite. Matt’s socks, which had turned black and had become much more silky to fit the composition of stockings, shot up the leg, stopping halfway up the upper leg. The waistline of Matt’s shorts tore itself away, and the shorts then used some of the dangling fabric to fasten itself to the shirt, flattening out as if it had been ironed too much. It much more resembled a frilly black attached skirt.

Matt’s shirt altered considerably as well, becoming much more of a dress shirt in terms of composition, complete with buttons towards the bottom, though being as this appeared to be a slip-on uniform, they didn't seem to have much purpose. The uniform then changed color in the same painter’s fashion. It was deep blue at the sleeves and at the collar, yellow at the side pleats, and white inside of the side pleats. To wrap things up, the leftovers from the shorts waistline flew back up and tore themselves apart even further, eventually forming small yellow strands which pieced themselves together. Some of the hair lost in the transformation came flying out of the ventilation to assist this formation. When all was said and done, a beautiful yellow hairbow had been created, and it placed itself gently in Matt’s hair to help secure what was still a pretty messy haircut. This transformation was complete.

***

"No way...what...", Matt finally said after what felt like a year of staring. Matt’s brain was losing it. What had happened, what were these new organs, what had happened to the old, why was everything so different from what it had just been a few minutes earlier, why was Matt speaking in the voice of Stephanie Sheh...and why did Matt now resemble Mai Natsume from BlazBlue: Centralfiction? "WHAT!? HOW DOES THIS...WHAT THE HELL!? NO! THIS CAN'T HAPPEN! ABSOLUTELY NOT! I REFUSE! I won't...allow..." Matt honestly wanted to break down into tears. This was too much. She had no idea how this had happened, no idea if there was any way to reverse it, no idea about...anything. What she did know, however, is that there was someone clomping down the hall, and that she needed to hide. It was back to the ventilation shaft.

"Where is that little cum dumpster?" Cum dumpster? This bastard was more juvenile than previously thought...in any case, the person saying this was, of course, the senior. He was still looking for Matt despite a good twenty minutes having passed, but he was close to giving up. "Ah, fuck ‘em, I’ll get another go. I gotta take a piss." The senior veered off into the bathroom and went up to one of the urinals. In the meantime, Matt had heard the senior, and was in the ventilation shaft, still in a haze.

"...How...why...no...this isn't permanent, right?" Matt shook her head and stared down at the book for a few seconds before something caught her eye. Just sitting there to the side of the ventilation shaft was a red spear, very well constructed out of a fine clear material, possibly some sort of plexiglass, with a metal inside to reinforce it. It hadn't been there before. Matt knew that she needed to get out of here, and with the senior being so unpredictable, she needed force. Despite not knowing its origins, Matt grabbed the spear and backed her way down to the toilet beneath the vent, leaving the book behind. It was a soft landing, but was still enough to get the senior's attention.

"What the shit? Who's there?" Matt kicked the door open. For some reason, despite the circumstances, she couldn't help but have a smile on her face. "The fuck are you?"

"I’m Mai Natsume, and let me tell you, you son of a bitch, I...uh..." Matt wanted to say that she burned, but stopped short after realizing how dumb that would be.

"You skank, get out of here!" Matt raised an eyebrow. For once, she actually felt confident enough to take on her adversary.

Mai’s life changed from that point onwards. No one recognized her, of course, but her insistence to being Matt seemed to be believed by some, and not by others. As for the senior, Mai’s asskicking of him got the attention of the police. While originally they were skeptical, after all the corroborating stories from the school about how abusive he had been, they finally began an investigation into both the senior and the principal. With the story of Reese having slowly started to leak out to the nation’s cops, they actually did believe Mai. The thought of having a girl was something Mai’s parents were stunned at, but eventually began to embrace, as even with having to redo all sorts of legal documents in a very covert fashion, as long as Mai was happy, there wasn't much they could do. But whether she was believed to be a new student pulling a weird story out of her ass or actually be Matt, Mai Hastings-Hazuki was a popular face from that point onward.

As for the book, it suspiciously had vanished even after Mai went back for it. No one is sure where it is, though that also means no one knows where it will turn up next...
